Makes you think - what is worse than a dictatorship? Nothing is worse, except for a failed state. Such a sad story.

Isn't Haiti sharing their island with the Dominican Republic? What is the explanation for why the Dominican Republic is doing relatively well, compared with Haiti?

Different colonial backgrounds, very different post-colonial experiences, punishment by France even after the revolution.

I don't think the NYT story mentioned this, but Haiti back in the 1800s conquered the Dominican side of the island for 22 years, and taxed them heavily to pay for the 150 million Franks. They forced use of French language over Spanish, closed their university, confiscated all church property and land, imposed mandatory military service, and generally tried to uproot their culture. They did abolish slavery on the Dominican side, but also relegated Dominicans to a lower, second-class level of citizenship. The NYT really cut corners in their expose.
